Bulawayo Pastor Ordains Son as Successor for Church Leadership

The founder of Upperoom Shekinah Ministries International, Fabian Phiri, has appointed his son as the next leader of the church, entrusting him with the responsibility of managing its day-to-day operations.

Phiri informed Southern Eye that they recognized many indigenous churches encounter succession issues, particularly once their founding leader departs.

We are consecrating pastors today (on Saturday), including my son. My role will shift to becoming the president of Upperoom Shekinah Ministries International, with my son managing the day-to-day operations.

"Many of these indigenous churches face succession issues where, upon the death of their leader, members—particularly those close followers aligned with the vision—are prone to compete for leadership roles within the congregation," he explained.

Phiri mentioned that he chose to hand over the baton to his son, Terrance, during his lifetime, reasoning that other pastors under him were younger in their careers compared to him.

The U.S.-based Reverend Level Thomas from Acts Inspired International, who has spent over 15 years traversing Africa to train and nurture successive generations, commended Phiri’s choice.

"Having succession occur while the father is still active can be beneficial as it enables him to observe whether his son is faltering or thriving," Thomas stated.

The founding president of the Council for Churches in Africa, Rocky Moyo, voiced his worries about power struggles among church leaders.

"Some conflicts conclude in legal proceedings, while others rely on spiritual guidance. We embrace this as it aligns with their constitutional framework and also serves as a prophecy," he stated.
