ICU-Ghana Calls on Workers to Drive Economic Growth

Accra, December 25, GNA – The Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union of Ghana has praised employees for their strength, urging them to keep striving diligently to attain lasting economic development and collective wealth.

Mr. Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary of ICU-Ghana, praised the efforts and roles of employees in driving economic growth in his holiday greeting.

He stated that the Union would never avoid its duty to struggle for the benefit of Ghanaian workers and would keep doing so until employees achieved their proper position.

Mr. Ayawine noted that while not all hopes were completely fulfilled, the small progress achieved thus far can act as a foundation to move workers forward toward 2026, aiming for better performance and higher pay.

Although there have been certain favorable economic signs throughout the year—including a fairly steady currency value, double-figure inflation, and lower borrowing costs—these improvements have not yet resulted in significant enhancements in the quality of life for regular employees.

"Essential items such as food, housing, and basic services continue to be mostly unaffordable for the typical employee," he stated.

He praised the government for completely replenishing the capital of the National Investment Bank Limited throughout the reviewed period, enabling the bank to carry out its responsibilities efficiently.

Mr. Ayawine called on the government to tackle the economic difficulties facing COCOBOD, an issue that continues to be of significant worry for Ghanaians.

Crucial is the necessity for the government to provide financial assistance to specific state-owned companies, such as PBC Limited, Volta Star Textile Limited, Graphic Communications Group Limited, New Times Corporation, New Neoplan Ghana Limited, and the Pwalugu Tomatoes Factory, along with completing the procedures needed for ALUWORKS to recover.

He emphasized that these actions would generate employment opportunities for the large number of young people without work, enabling them to play an effective role in the nation's economic and social progress.

He praised the contribution of employers toward boosting efficiency and urged full compliance with collective agreements as well as Ghana's labor regulations to maintain workplace stability.

We strongly warn anti-union companies that violate employees' rights by blocking unions, turning positions into temporary roles, and withholding proper pay, compensation, and perks to stop these actions, since they have significant repercussions.

"I commend all employees and our social collaborators, and I extend to you and your loved ones a Happy Christmas and a successful New Year," he stated.
